Prices may be higher than they seem — Protect America may seem cheap at first, but remember that the lowest prices are for landline coverage without app access. Our Security Nerds have seen contracts that span one year and some that are as many as five years. Three years (36 months) is probably the most typical length. A few companies even offer the ability to choose your contract length—pick a shorter or no contract, and you’ll pay more per month; a longer contract means a lower payment.
- Features: You’re going to want to choose a system that offers you security options that give you peace of mind. Most companies offer base packages that include a control panel, door and window sensors, and a motion sensor. Upgrade or add on to a base package to get additional features, such as a flood detector, smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors, indoor cameras and/or outdoor cameras.

Plus, running on batteries means that your system will work in a power outage. (You do have to remember to change the batteries occasionally though.) But if you live in an area where cell service is spotty or unreliable, a landline system is probably better for you. Know that some home security systems are a hybrid of cellular and landline, which may offer the best of both worlds.
- Mobile app: If you want to control your security system and smart home features from anywhere in your home—or even when you’re away from home—getting one that has a mobile app will be key. Most security companies today offer a mobile app, but some are more reliable than others. Note that you may not have a mobile app option with some lower priced and/or landline home security packages.
